Sarah Miles
This British stage actress has contributed some striking characterizations in films, but her screen appearances have been sporadic at best. Initially the darling of "New Wave" devotees for her turns in Joseph Losey's The Servant (1963) and Michelangelo Antonioni'sBlow Up (1966), Miles endeared herself to American audiences with her Academy Award-nominated performance in Ryan's Daughter (1970). Her torrid sex scenes with Kris Kristofferson in The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea (1976) aroused censorial ire and made the tabloids. Since the mid 1980s Miles has been seen in character roles, most effectively in Steaming (1985), Hope and Glory (superb as the matriarch of a British family during the WW2 blitz), and White Mischief (1988, as a depraved hedonist living in Africa during the 1940s).
